Poppy goes solo for second supreme
Young ponies take the spoils, with a four-year-old keeping his head to land the overall accolade
THE four-year—old Rotherwood Rainmaker landed the Dick Saunders pony supreme. Ridden by Poppy Carter, he produced a flawless performance to earn 29 marks out of 30 from judges Lucy Smith-Crallan. Lisha Leeman and Karen Toynton-Ward.
After triumphing at the BSPS Winter Championships on another four-year-old, Woodview Shangri La, Poppy again weaved her magic to conjure a mannerly show from this elegant Rotherwood Peter Pan gelding.
Poppy’s mother Katy bought the pony from Di and George Brereton after seeing his picture on the internet.
“When we saw him in the flesh, he was definitely coming home, with us.” said Katy.
Poppy, nine, had little time to prepare for both her show pony and supreme championships, as she was also competing in the first ridden class — which she won with Megland Jaunty.

Poppy had to be “buggied” up; to the International Arena twice to ‘ fit everything in, but she plotted her final performance well.
“lt was difficult to weave in and out of the fences and l didn’t think we could manage to get in a ‘ serpentine. But we did.” she said. Although the Staffordshire rider is a past winner of the pony supreme, this is the first-time she has ridden solo in the International Arena — her first title was on the lead-rein pony Chagiord Lewis in 2009.

Three Wins and Two Titles (Horse and Hound)
KATY CARTER was the one to beat in pony ranks, claiming three wins, two titles and two HOYS tickets ahead of strong competition. Her daughter Poppy, nine, continued her run to head the show pony section on the four-year-old 128cm victor, Rotherwood Rainmaker. He came from Di Brereton, unbroken, in November and this was his fourth show, fifth open class and second qualifier.
“He can be a little green sometimes, but he’s always willing,” said Katy. Poppy scored again with the already-qualified 122cm show hunter pony Woodend Matilda, and Katy braved driving rain to head a marathon native mini- qualifier with the first-season combination of the five-year-old Dartmoor lead-rein victor, Coxwood Nimbus and Jacob Maher Burn.

Poppy Carter and Megland Jauty (Horse and Hound)
THREE shows and three qualifying tickets is an impressive record for any pony, out for a four-year-old it is even more of an achievement. Marg Cartlidge’s unbeaten Megland Jaunty has now claimed qualification for the RIHS, HOYS and BSPS premier league finals.
Here at Cheshire, given a great ride by Poppy Carter, Jaunty added the mini show pony tricolour to that already gained at BSPS Area 16 on her ridden debut.
Despite incessant rain and heavy traffic rattling along the adjacent roadway, this free-moving, elegant mare floated round the huge ring, displaying impeccable manners. Bred by Jean Redpath and by the 2011 Cuddy-qualified Stanley - Grange Cocksure, Jaunty was bought by Poppy’s mother Katy at last year’s Ponies (UK) Summer Championships after she contested the Cuddy qualifier with Simon Charlesworth.
“She has a lovely attitude,” said Katy. “She’s never been to a busy I show like this, but she never faltered.”

A Proper kids’s pony (Showing World)
The smallest contender in the strong show hunter pony finale took the title. This was nine-year old Poppy Carter with Woodend Matilda, described by her mother Katy as “a real, proper kid’s pony that anyone can ride.”
There are not many pony trophies missing from the Carter sideboard but, until now, this and been one of them.
Always uphill soft and obedient, this charismatic mare is in her second season with Poppy, but was unable to contest HOYS qualifiers last year as Katy’s sister was judging at Birmingham

Let’s Hear it for the Boys (Horse and Hound)
Under the guidance of producer Katy Carter, three young ponies and their jockeys collected some of the last tickets to Hickstead.
Jacobs Maher-Burns landed the Hertiage mini tricolour riding Coxwood Ninbus. A five-year-old bu Shilstone Rocks Warlord, the Dartmoor was broken at Christmas and displayed impeccable manners.
Katy also led Erimus Toy Soldier, by Wharley Grenadier, and Richard Trevitick to head the lead-lein of show hunter type.
Ross Gilmour completed the hat-trick when the Ardenhall Missoni won her first ridden class and took the mini show pony reserve on her showing debut. Tigress is full-sister to the prolific winner Trevaylor Tiger Lily

Winter Novice & Restricted Supreme Poppy Carter and Woodview Shangri-La
(Showing World)
Poppy Carter took centre to capture the winter novice/restricted supreme award, after heading the novice/restricted mini show ponies with Rod and Marg Cartlidge’s, first ridden four-year-old mare Woodview Shangri-La,
“My Parents bought her unbroken last September and this is only her second outing,” said Katy Carter, “as I was Judging yesterday, my father had to step in to organize Poppy and the pony.”

Heavenly young pair take top title (Horse and Hound)
BSPS Winter Championship Allington Lincs
21-22 April
Nine-year-old Poppy Carter gave Woodview Shangri-La the ride of her life to claim the winter novice and restricted supreme Arena UK.
Those who know Poppy well would not expect her to blow her own trumpet, but make no mistake, this was an outstanding performance – Poppy was a young head on even younger shoulders as Woodview Shangri-La is a four-year-old.
As her mother, producer Kay had judging commitments, Poppy performed solo all week and her supreme show was all her own work.
“So she doesn’t become too dependent on me, I always leave Poppy to make her own mind in championships,” said Katy. “I am overwhelmed and so proud of her.” She has a new combination of young ponies and she and Dad {Rod Cartlidge} have just got on with everything, I hope I’m not redundant now!”
Poppy final performance was stunning, Pony and rider were in complete harmony throughout and left the arena in the most breathtaking extended trot.

Chevalier doubles up (Horse and Hound)
However, it was from the 143cm ranks that Carolyn Whiteley chose her champion, Stychlands Chevalier, owned by Liz Stanleick and ridden by 13-year-old Harriet Searle, post his second win in as many outings, having taken his RIHS ticket the previous day at Solihull.
“This is the best pony I have judged all day,” said Carolyn, “ Her is a lovely, quality animal very true to type and with lovely manners for such a youngster.”
The six-year-old, bred by Monica Beeston by Stychlands Noble Heir, is in his first full season, having been broken by his producer Katy Carter last year.
